About Tree of Life
Throughout history, many cultures have used the Tree of Life as a symbol of health and well-being. Trees are beautiful living organisms required for a healthy and thriving ecosystem. They come in many shapes and sizes, and grow in unusual circumstances.
Just like a tree, our program starts with the seed of intention. Under the right conditions, the seed develops roots that are deep, strong, and continuously growing, and a trunk that supports branches that blossom with leaves and flowers, living in harmony with the surrounding environment, attracting a diversity of life to create a strong, resilient, and flourishing tree that can withstand and embrace changes and challenges. This is what it means to live an anti-cancer lifestyle. This lifestyle also helps individuals to reduce the likelihood of aggravating conditions such as, lack of energy, weight gain, poor sleep quality, chronic stress or depression, digestive issues, low immune system function, poor skin quality, premature ageing, and reduced cognitive function, that can be precursors to other chronic illnesses including obesity, mental health, type-2 diabetes, arthritis, asthma, osteoporosis, and heart disease.

The Tree of Life Vitality and Cancer Defense Program
Module 1 (Roots): Stress Management and Emotional Well-being
Our health represents our core values, support system, and stress savviness. This root system anchors our health and well-being deeper into the Earth. Over time, roots grow, expand, get deeper, and navigate around obstacles in the soil to continue supporting the tree.
In this module, you'll learn what's most important to you by identifying and connecting with your core values. You'll know stress, its impacts, and the tools to become stress savvy. You'll learn the importance of connection through various support systems, social connections, and services.
This is the first and most detailed module. Securing your roots through understanding your core values and emotional triggers is something you’ll continue to use throughout the course, so stick with it and get the fundamentals in place.
Module 2 (Trunk): Growth and Behaviour Change
When we think about all that contributes to the roots and branches of our health, it usually requires changing our behaviours. As our lives grow and change, so do our ways of life, and physical and mental capabilities.
After going through a life transition or overcoming a difficult health journey such as cancer, we also must make behavioural changes to meet where we are now, and what we must do to stay well. It can involve changing regular practices and efforts in exercise and movement, nutrition, social groups, relationships, thought patterns, sleep, and more.
Change can be hard and needs the right approach. Fortunately, science has shown us the idea of neuroplasticity, where our brains have the malleability and capability to change behaviours and thoughts. With the right approach and strong foundational roots, change can be more doable and last longer.
In this module, we talk about evidence-based practices to help create sustainable change and build healthy habits. It’s the trunk of the Tree of Life.
Your Tree of Life must have the courage to sprout and grow from the trunk with a supported approach to develop your branches of health and wellness.
In this pathway through the trunk of behaviour change, you'll learn concepts to understand change, assess where you’re currently at, align change with your core values, create a vision to look forward to, discover why change is important to you, create and act upon achievable bite-sized SMART goals, learn about the five stages of change, know how to overcome barriers, and see where there’s room to grow.
Change is an experiment. With the growth of change connected to strong and stable roots, we'll create an even stronger trunk.
Module 3 (Branch): Nutrition
There are three, equally important, branches on your Tree of Life: Nutrition, Exercise and Movement, and Sleep.
The first branch we'll talk about is nutrition:
Food is nourishment to your body, brain, energy, and emotions. The stronger your roots, the more quickly your tree will receive nutrients. When you nourish your tree, you contribute to its ability to stay healthy and flourish. When you consume unhealthy foods, slowly, over time, your tree will lack the nutrients it needs for energy, strength, and health.
Your tree needs to be nourished to develop the right kind of branches. The thickness of your branches is dependent on receiving the right nourishment.
Let's relate this to your weight:
Not having the right quantity and quality of nutrients can result in your branches being too thin, or being underweight, leaving your tree, or your body, depleted.
On the flip side, too many unhealthy foods entering your body will cause inflammation and your body to be overweight.
Staying at a healthy weight is essential for the optimal functioning of your body, mind, and spirit: Just like your tree that thrives on nutrients from the Earth, not garbage and toxins.
Trees also need the proper amount of water. Hydration is an essential part of nourishing the whole of your tree: From the tips of the roots to the edge of the leaves. This nourishment feels so good that your tree will crave more.
Depending on your tree's values, food may come in different forms to provide you with the nutrients that you need to feel well.
In this module, you'll learn the importance of nutrition, we’ll give you the tools to monitor and target your ideal weight; recommendations based on strong supporting evidence for eating an optimal anti-cancer diet when working to reduce the risk of a cancer diagnosis, when supporting healthy cells and organs whilst undergoing cancer treatment, when wanting to aid recovery after treatment, and when reducing the risk of cancer recurrence; we’ll cover meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, oils, alcohol, sugar, herbs and spices, teas, and water. You’ll also learn tips and tricks for shopping and dining with your values to help you create a plan and implement changes to grow this branch on your Tree of Life, ready for healthy leaves and flowers to bloom.
Module 4 (Branch): Exercise and Movement
The first branch on your Tree of Life was nutrition. The second and third branches are Exercise and Movement, and Sleep.
Here, we’ll talk about the second branch on your Tree of Life: Exercise and movement.
As we learnt in the nutrition module, obesity is directly linked to cancer and chronic disease. Being overweight or obese is linked with an increased risk of cancer [1]. Fortunately, movement is a great way to maintain a healthy weight. And, you can have fun while doing it!
Not only does movement improve and maintain a healthy weight, but it also improves your body’s function and mental health. If you exercise with a friend or in a group, you get the bonus of having community and social connections.
There are various categories of exercise to incorporate into your life, such as cardiovascular, strength training, flexibility, and balance. When you move, you can also build back the bone and muscle that you may have lost during cancer treatments.
In this module, you’ll learn, on a high level, how movement impacts your health. You’ll know what categories of movement are necessary, how much, how often, and what options bring you joy while you do it. As we mentioned, obesity is a challenge for anyone, especially cancer survivors. Movement can reduce weight, and has many more benefits such as cancer prevention and reduction, sleep and mental health improvement, social connection, reduced stress, increased energy, and more! Movement is an essential branch on your Tree of Life. It keeps your tree strong and helps it flourish.
Module 5 (Branch): Sleep
We already covered the first and second branches on your Tree of Life—nutrition, and exercise and movement. Here, we’ll talk about sleep, the third branch on your Tree of Life.
Sleep can both contribute to the health, but, if not cared for, can also slow down the growth of all branches. In fact, the health of each individual branch—nutrition, exercise and movement, and sleep—will affect the health of all branches, and your entire tree.
Sleep is a foundational branch on your overall Tree of Life and sometimes wrongly placed lower on the priority list. Our bodies are made to have ample time to slow down, rest, recover, and rebuild so that everything operates smoothly. Unfortunately, when other parts of our tree aren’t strong, such as movement, nutrition, or stress, it can impact our ability to sleep well.
In this module, you’ll learn why sleep is so important and how it’s beautifully connected to all you do. We’ll cover the stages you go through and what happens to your brain and body while you sleep, we’ll tell you the recommended amount of sleep, explain what happens with too little and too much sleep, we’ll cover sleep disorders and challenges, and we’ll give you lots of techniques to empower you to improve your sleep.
In a culture that’s fast paced and full of information overload, it’s important to focus on growing this branch strong to set up your body and mind to be able to cope with all it has to withstand. As you go through this module you’ll also start to see how the different parts of your Tree of Life are interconnected, and where individual healthy parts make up a flourishing tree.
Module 6 (Leaves): Gut Health, Digestion and Elimination
Your growing and healthy Tree of Life is part of a natural and continuous cycle. Healthy soil provides the roots of your tree with water and nutrients. Your tree uses its broad leaves to absorb light from the sun and carbon dioxide from the air. Your tree converts all this into energy that helps it to grow and protect itself. At the same time, in exchange for the water and nutrients, your tree passes some of its carbon to help improve the health of the soil.
Think about how you and your tree are part of the same ecosystem; when we breathe in the oxygen that trees release, we breathe out carbon dioxide in exchange, so that trees get the carbon they need to grow.
We too have a natural cycle that regulates and protects us. Proper digestion and elimination extracts all the nutrients we need from our food, drink, and air, and removes and expels the waste and unwanted toxins from our body whilst our immune system helps protect us from disease.
Whereas digestion and elimination might be easy to understand and visualise, the immune system, this invisible, natural defence system might not be. Firstly, it's important to note that the majority of our immune system is made up of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms and microbes, called the microbiome, with the majority of our microbiome, and immune system, located in our gut. As our Tree of Life lives in partnership with its surroundings, we too need to build a partnership with our immune system.
What we eat, how we manage stress, and the quality of our sleep all contribute to a healthy microbiome and the ability to protect ourselves. It’s also important to remember that following any serious illness or major medical procedure, our immune system may have been compromised so it’s vital that we learn how to rebuild and restore it.
Modules 1 and 2, Stress Management and Emotional Well-being and Growth and Behaviour Change, were about establishing stable and deep roots and a strong and supportive trunk. Modules 3, 4, and 5 used those foundations to grow your branches of health and wellness in nutrition, exercise and movement, and sleep. From this module onwards we’ll build on what you’ve already learnt to help you get the most from your anti-cancer lifestyle by optimising and protecting.
In this module, you’ll learn, at a high level, what we mean by gut health, digestion and elimination and why it’s important. We’ll introduce you to your immune system and the enzymes that are an essential part of digestion. You’ll discover probiotics and prebiotics; what they are, why they’re important, and where you get them from. Lastly, we’ll give you tools and techniques to improve your immune system by taking another look at previous modules and how they interact to keep you healthy and protected, including being a mindful eater, maintaining optimal bowel movements, eating fibre and getting the right amount of hydration, walking and exercise, and how to combine all of this to improve your gut health, elimination and digestion.
This is such an exciting part of your anti-cancer lifestyle journey. You’ve made it this far in the program because you established your foundations and committed to making positive changes. Whilst the science of gut health and the immune system is complex, we’ve kept away from introducing another new topic to learn, instead we’ve focused on helping you to optimise, enhance, and protect the roots, trunk, and branches on your Tree of Life to help you establish the foundations of your anti-cancer lifestyle journey.
Module 7 (Environment): Protection from Toxins
Congratulations on working through the Tree of Life modules on Stress Management and Emotional Well-being, Growth and Behaviour Change, Nutrition, Exercise and Movement, Sleep, and Gut Health, Digestion and Elimination! Investing in yourself takes real effort, so well done!
You've learnt all about the vital components that make up a strong and healthy tree and given yourself the opportunity to apply these principles to your unique and healthy lifestyle.
Remember, Protection From Toxins and the Environment is the final scheduled module, but it's not the end. This is the next step in your anti-cancer journey and introduces you to methods you can use to safeguard all the progress and positive change you've made so far.
Strong evidence shows that coming in contact with, ingesting, or being surrounded by environmental toxins increases your risk of developing cancer and other chronic illnesses.
When you think about your Tree of Life, you want to protect and nourish all the beautiful parts: Roots, Trunk, Branches, and Leaves. This means feeding your tree with fertile soil, nutrients, water, sun, and love. Suppose you think about a tree living in the middle of a city filled with pollution and chemicals. In this case, the tree has to work harder in this toxic environment, and can be poisoned quickly, or slowly over time, depending on the amount of toxins. This also relates to your body and overall health. Avoiding toxins and pollutants will help to protect your health and wellness.
Think of your tree, and the efforts you have put in so far for it to grow and bloom, as sacred. It’s essential not to poison your hard work, good feelings, strength, and beautiful blossoming leaves and flowers.
It’s becoming easier to find pure, clean, or plant-based products. That way, not only are you nourishing your tree with nutrients and care, but also protecting your tree, and body, from toxins.
Modules 1 and 2, Stress Management and Emotional Well-being and Growth and Behaviour Change, were all about establishing stable and deep roots and a strong and supportive trunk. Modules 3, 4, and 5 used those foundations to grow your branches of health and wellness in nutrition, exercise and movement, and sleep. In the previous module we built on what you already learnt by focusing on optimising your health and eliminating waste and toxins. This time we’re going to focus on protecting your tree from the toxins that make their way into our everyday lives.
In this module, you’ll learn how toxins and pollutants impact our bodies, the areas of the home that may contain toxins, and how to identify potentially toxic products and ingredients.
This part of your anti-cancer lifestyle journey may be shocking, however, use the strength of your trunk, and your skills in growth and behaviour change to turn this new level of awareness into action by taking control of your environment and protecting your hard work so that your tree continues to flourish.
To help, you’ll find that this module is both informative, with guidance on reading product labels, and selecting products that may be better for your health; and practical, with recommendations to make quick and easy changes that improve your environment, such as filtering your tap water, not using plastic containers when reheating your food, using beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap, switching off your mobile phone at night, opening windows to ventilate the rooms in your home, taking 2-minutes to make your own body wash, and switching from artificial air fresheners to organic essential oils, plus other recommendations once you’ve got started with the basics.
All of what you learn in this module is backed up by a vast amount of Toolkit and Knowledge Base content to help you implement what you learn.
Eliminating all toxins from your body and surroundings may not be 100% possible all the time. However, we’ll show that you have the power to protect your tree and reduce many of the unnecessary toxin exposures you can encounter. This also takes time, learning, and potentially new ways of living. You’ll have to navigate costs, and find the healthiest products and changes that fit your budget.
Along with the resources in the Supporting Your Journey section of this module, you can use the workbook to gauge where you’re at, where to start, and what changes to make step by step. This is because living an anti-cancer lifestyle is about continued learning, finding what works for you then adapting as your circumstances or priorities change: And, this Tree of Life Vitality and Cancer Defense Program is just the same, working through the modules and lessons isn’t the end goal, it’s just the end of the beginning. We’ll keep supporting, inspiring, and empowering you to continue on your own anti-cancer lifestyle journey.

Tree of Life’s online anti-cancer lifestyle community and coaching program is an entrypoint to a better life. We believe that every person should have the chance to become a part of the anti-cancer movement, so the Tree of Life online community and first program module are free to all individuals who want to change their behaviours and improve their overall health.
To start your journey towards better health, your free subscription grants you access to the first module of the Tree of Life Vitality and Cancer Defense Program. This module focuses on improving your stress management and emotional well-being so that you can develop a strong foundation on which to build a healthier future.
In Module 1, you'll learn what's most important to you by identifying and connecting with your core values. You'll know stress, its impacts, and the tools to become stress savvy. You'll learn the importance of connection through various support systems, social connections, and services.
This is the first and most detailed module. Securing your roots through understanding your core values and emotional triggers is something you’ll continue to use throughout your anti-cancer lifestyle change, so stick with it and get the fundamentals in place.
The second core component of a free subscription is membership in the Tree of Life community, which allows you to connect with other people who are impacted by cancer. Conversations within the community revolve around adopting an anti-cancer lifestyle during any phase of your cancer journey, including prevention, upon diagnosis, during treatment, and after treatment.
Cancer is often an isolating disease that leaves you feeling disconnected from the people closest to you, and our community offers the opportunity to engage with cancer patients and survivors who are experiencing the same fear and doubts and want to improve their health outcomes by making positive changes to improve their quality of life.
The online community is also a supportive space for caregivers, who frequently sacrifice their own mental and physical health while investing all of their energy into helping others.
No matter your connection to cancer, you’ll benefit from our community events, where you can network with experts and other individuals whose circumstances parallel your own. Additionally, access to Toolkit and Knowledge Base content will empower you with information about how to adopt and live an anti-cancer lifestyle.

Tree of Life is an online, on-demand, and self-guided anti-cancer lifestyle community and coaching program that looks at health from a holistic, whole person perspective. Just as a tree has roots, a trunk, branches, and leaves, your journey toward better health involves many different steps and components.
A paid Tree of Life subscription grants you access to our complete series of 7 expertly crafted modules focused on the core elements of an anti-cancer lifestyle: Stress management and emotional well-being; growth and behaviour change; nutrition; exercise and movement; sleep; gut health, digestion and elimination; and protection from toxins.
Each module includes video lessons, workbook exercises, knowledge checks, and community networks, moderated by our qualified health coaches, that explore how lifestyle and behaviour changes contribute to improved overall health. You’ll also have access to your own private Journal, in which you can record your thoughts, questions, and concerns as you work through the process. The Journal also serves as a symptom tracker.
In Module 1, you'll learn what's most important to you by identifying and connecting with your core values. You'll know stress, its impacts, and the tools to become stress savvy. You'll learn the importance of connection through various support systems, social connections, and services.
In Module 2, you’ll develop a trunk that supports sustainable change and healthy habits.
In Modules 3, 4, and 5, you’ll sprout branches that will nourish your tree with nutrition, exercise and movement, and sleep.
In Module 6, we’ll build on what you’ve already learnt to help you get the most from your anti-cancer lifestyle by improving your gut health, digestion and elimination.
And in Module 7, you’ll be empowered to protect your tree from toxins and continue your anti-cancer lifestyle journey. After completing Module 7, you’ll receive an exclusive invitation to book a complimentary one-on-one lifestyle analysis with a professional health coach. By design, the program allows you to work at the pace that’s best for you and to revisit any module as many times as you like.
When you sign up for a Tree of Life paid subscription, you’ll become a member of an online community that allows you to connect with other individuals in the anti-cancer movement, including people interested in cancer prevention, current cancer patients, cancer survivors, caregivers, health coaches, and health and wellness experts. With separate online forums specifically dedicated to each anti-cancer topic and a general forum for all Tree of Life participants, you can engage in conversations around the subjects that you find most interesting and relevant to your present needs.
Tree of Life helps break the cycle of chronic illness and reduces the risk of developing a serious disease like cancer, as well as heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and auto-immune conditions, and mental health challenges. It also helps improve treatment outcomes, offers support during the post-treatment recovery process, and serves as an emotional safety net for caregivers, current patients, and survivors.
No matter how you’ve been affected by cancer, Tree of Life is the first step toward a better life, and we’re happy to take the journey with you.
